When replacing makes more sense than repairing

Your system is old. A system that is 12 to 15 years old or more is near the end of its life. Many in DeSoto have likely been replaced once or twice already, since the city grew fast in the 1970s and 1980s.

You keep paying for repairs. One repair is normal. A second and a third on the same system is a sign. Our repair or replace checklist will help you decide.

It runs on old refrigerant. New systems no longer use R-410A, and most now use R-454B. R-410A is still legal to service, but supply is being cut and it costs more than it used to. Very old systems that run on R-22 are harder to recharge every year. Each repair on these systems makes less sense than the one before.

Hail got it. Texas is one of the top three states for severe hail, and North Texas is one of its most active areas. April and May are the peak months. If a storm damaged your outdoor unit, see hail-damaged AC replacement.

Systems we replace

Split AC systems. An outdoor unit and an indoor unit work as a pair. This is the most common setup for a central air home.

AC and furnace together. If both are near the end of life, replacing them together means the outdoor unit, the indoor coil and the furnace or air handler work as one set. Read more on our AC and furnace replacement page.

Package units. The cooling and heating sit in one outdoor cabinet. We cover this on our package unit replacement page.

What to know before you replace

Efficiency rules. Texas is in the DOE Southeast region. New split-system ACs under 45,000 BTU/h must meet 14.3 SEER2 if they are installed on or after January 1, 2023. Larger units must meet 13.8 SEER2. We explain this in plain words in our guide to SEER2 in Texas.

What affects the job. The efficiency rating, the type of motor, the size of your home and the system, any duct changes, add-ons like a thermostat, and local labor all change what a replacement involves. We cover each one in what affects an AC replacement.

Ask about the license. Texas licenses air conditioning contractors through TDLR. Ask any company you talk to for its TDLR license number.

Questions

Should I repair my AC or replace it?

It depends on age, repair history and how well the system cools. A system that is 12 to 15 years old or more and keeps breaking is usually a good case for replacing. A newer system with one small problem is usually worth repairing. If you are not sure, call us and we will talk it through.

What is SEER2, and does my new AC have to meet it?

SEER2 is the efficiency rating on new air conditioners. Texas is in the DOE Southeast region. For split-system ACs under 45,000 BTU/h, the minimum is 14.3 SEER2 for units installed on or after January 1, 2023. At 45,000 BTU/h or more, the minimum is 13.8 SEER2.

Do new ACs use a different refrigerant?

Yes. Since January 2025, new residential AC equipment can no longer ship with R-410A. Most makers now use R-454B. R-410A is still legal to service, but supply is being cut and it costs more than it used to.

Does insurance cover hail damage to my AC?

It depends on your policy, so ask your insurer. Take photos of the damage before any repair. Wind and hail deductibles in North Texas are often a percentage of the home's insured value.

What is a package unit?

A package unit puts the cooling and heating in one outdoor cabinet. It can sit on a roof, in a crawl space or on the ground. It is common where there is no indoor space for a furnace and a separate coil.

What should I ask any AC company before I hire them?

Ask for its TDLR license number. Texas licenses air conditioning contractors through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
